Mari Crook is an abstract expressionist artist based in Berlin. She considers her art to be an active meditative practice. By tapping into a state of intuitive flow, she rediscovers play while grounding herself more deeply in a state of heart-centered presence.
Art was my first love that I pushed aside in favor of what I believed society valued more: intellectual and financial success. However, in 2022, I felt a strong urge to reconnect with art on my own terms. Embracing the mantra "It's okay if this isn't beautiful," I focused on the process rather than the end result. This shift allowed me to tap into my intuition, let go of self-imposed pressure, and create without the need to make a "worthy" finished piece.
Engaging in abstract art proved liberating as I granted myself permission to take risks and make mistakes. In the process of dropping my own expectations and continuing to layer, rework, and transform my canvas over time and ongoing surrender, I found myself looking in the end at something that resonated with my own heart as beautiful. My goal was to move away from overthinking and embrace my embodied intuitions. I recognized that the story behind my art would unfold naturally, and I found myself gravitating towards themes of movement, balance, repetition, and primordially vital forms.
Creating art that can be viewed from any angle became a fascination of mine. I constantly rotate the canvas, seeking new perspectives and restoring balance by adding elements as needed. Color and form are never confined to a specific location; instead, I aim to create a sense of equilibrium when the artwork is viewed as a whole. Movement is another key element. I incorporate streams and tracks of color to guide the viewer's attention across the artwork. Each color and recurrent form offers a different journey through the canvas.
Ultimately, I embrace elementary, patterned forms that are inspired by nature on both macro and microscopic levels. These gestural patterns welcome imperfections and reflect the basic morphology of life. Their rounded, curved structures carry the simplicity of a child's first attempts at drawing. They are the forms of life and of my younger self. Through my art, I rediscover my creative joy and reclaim my authentic self. Through this reclamation, I bring myself more fully to life, and this aliveness reveals itself in my work. Thank you for bearing witness to these inner expressions of me.
